It's about time

An article in yesterday's Boston Globe announced that BPA will now be banned for use in bottles and sippy cups. Read more here State bans bottles and cups with BPA
I am definitely happy to hear about this and agree that the ban should go even further to remove this chemical from children toys. After reading that BPA can leach through breast milk I found this article listing companies that do not use BPA in their canned goods. 7 Companies You Can Trust to Use BPA-free Cans

This is the sippy cup we use and it is great, it is a little heavy when filled with water so we only fill it half way at this point.

My breast friend

Seriously! This thing is awesome. I own a boppy and a breast friend and I have used both extensively. By a landslide the breast friend is easier to use and more comfortable. A strap wraps around you and there is a padded piece in the back to lean on. The front has two raised portions which help to elevate your baby's head so it is correctly positioned for feeding.
At this point  (7 month old baby) I only use it when I am nursing and pumping at the same time, but I am able to do both these things hands free with its help.

Happy Holidays!!!

How safe is your car seat?

With lots of people traveling for the holidays it is a good idea to review the safety of your car seat. While it may look like your car seat is installed correctly, there are many small details that can affect its safety. I just installed Lily's convertible seat and went to our local police station to have it inspected. It was in nice and secure, but the officer pointed out a few other safety precautions. He said the retractable sun shades on the windows are not safe. They are dangerous because they could fly off in an accident and hit the baby in the head. He recommended the non-retractable ones that only use suction cups. He also said that mirrors that are installed so you can see the baby are not good. If there was an accident the baby could hit their head on it. So down come the sun shades and good bye mirror. It makes me wonder why these items are even sold.

Some other safety tips you may not know
• Use blankets to keep your child warm rather than a bulky jacket
• Be sure to put the handle down on any bucket car seat
• Tighten straps tight enough that only one finger can fit underneath it
• Putting the seat in the middle and rear facing is the safest

It gets easier

I wish that in the moment it was easier to say and feel this. There are so many challenges we face as parents and in the moment they seem to last an eternity. Some hurdles that come to mind are cluster feeding, teething and most recently separation anxiety.
Looking back I remember sitting on my couch thinking I would never be able to leave my house while Lily cluster fed. It lasted a little less than two weeks, but it definitely put me into a state of despair. Once it was over I felt so silly because it really didn't last that long at all. I told myself that the next time a hurdle came along I would remind myself that what they say is true.
It goes by so fast!  When you are in the moment it is hard to remember that.

I would say breastfeeding support is the key to success. Here are some of the resources I use.

A healthy start

We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. While taking care of a little one it can be tough to get in a filling and healthy meal. Here is a recipe that I make almost every morning that is simple and full of the protein you need to get you through the day.

1.5 Cups Berries (I like strawberries)
.5 Cup Fat Free Plain Greek Yogurt
.5 Cup Cereal (I like Kashi GoLean Crunch)

I use frozen berries so they are all ready to go, all you need to do is heat them in the microwave for about 2 minutes and add in the cereal and greek yogurt. This is also a great snack for around 2:00 when your blood sugar levels start to decline.

Enjoy!

The day care squeeze - From The Boston Globe

I wanted to share an interesting article from today's Boston Globe , The day care squeeze. Before deciding to leave my job and become a stay at home mom I did an extensive amount of research on different options for a child care provider. In the end I decided to stay home. It was the best decision I have ever made.

Primo Eurobath

When my daughter Lily was born I purchased your standard infant tub with net insert. When she got too big for it my I was not quite sure which product to go with until.....I discovered the Eurobath! This tub is fantastic! You put the child in one side as an infant and when they are big enough to sit on their own you put them at the other end! Just look how relaxed Lily is in her Eurobath!
